STATEMENT OF COUPLES FOR CHRIST - FOUNDATION FOR FAMILY & LIFE (USA)
ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S DECISION TO ALLOW TAXPAYER MONEY
TO PROLIFERATE EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

WE, the COUPLES FOR CHRIST - FOUNDATION FOR FAMILY & LIFE (USA), an ecclesial movement in the Catholic Church, hereby declare that our members are appalled by President Barack Obama's decision allowing our tax dollars to fund the proliferation of embryonic stem cell research that will result in the rampant killing of living embryos.

This move by the President swings the door wide open in the production of more embryos in the laboratories of scientists and the destruction of such scientifically proven living persons, though early in their development as human beings, for the purpose of harvesting their human cells for trial and error experimentation.  It is indeed discouraging that in the midst of a dying economy and the devastation of the equity on our homes and retirement funds, this President chooses to invest millions more of federal funds to support the unpromising and “dying” technology that is embryonic stem cell research instead of the ethical and successfully proven adult stem cell research.

By making this unprecedented move that even co-Democrat President Clinton did not approve, President Obama boldly stamps his administration as a major architect in further escalating the culture of death in this country.  We, the Couples for Christ - Foundation for Family and Life (USA), therefore denounce this aggressive killing of innocent life for use of their stem cells (body parts) as the most immoral, unethical, and misguided decision ever by a US President.

On this dark day in the history of the US, we pray for America, “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all”.

A Pro-Life Compilation
Posted By: Human Life of Washington-State Office, Dan Kennedy, CEO

Since his election, President Obama and his administration have worked tirelessly to promote abortion and hurt pro-life gains made in the past several years.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The following is a compilation of bill signings, speeches, appointments and other actions that President Barack Obama has engaged in that have promoted abortion before and during his presidency. While Obama has promised to reduce abortions and some of his supporters believe that will happen, this long list proves his only agenda is promoting more abortions.

E-ALERT

President Obama lifts executive order restricting federal (taxpayer) funding for destructive research on human embryos

"A Sad Victory of Politics over Science and Ethics," says Cardinal Rigali, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities

Msgr. Mark Seitz: "When moral absolutes are sacrificed, no matter how good and urgent our intention may be, we all sacrifice our human dignity."

Executive Order on Embryonic Stem Cells "A Sad Victory of Politics over Science and Ethics," says Cardinal Rigali
WASHINGTON Cardinal Justin Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, today called President Obama's executive order on embryonic stem cell research "a sad victory of politics over science and ethics."  Under the order, for the first time in U.S. history, federal tax dollars will be used to encourage researchers to destroy live human embryos for stem cell research.  Cardinal Rigali also cited a January 16 letter in which Cardinal Francis George, president of the USCCB, urged President-elect Obama not to issue such an order. Cardinal Rigali's statement follows:
"President Obama's new executive order on embryonic stem cell research is a sad victory of politics over science and ethics.  This action is morally wrong because it encourages the destruction of innocent human life, treating vulnerable human beings as mere products to be harvested.  It also disregards the values of millions of American taxpayers who oppose research that requires taking human life.  Finally, it ignores the fact that ethically sound means for advancing stem cell science and medical treatments are readily available and in need of increased support.

"In his January 16th letter to President-elect Obama, Cardinal George, writing as President of the USCCB, cited three reasons why such destructive research is 'especially pointless at this time':
  • 'First, basic research in the capabilities of embryonic stem cells can be and is being pursued using the currently eligible cell lines as well as the hundreds of lines produced with nonfederal funds since 2001.
  • 'Second, recent startling advances in reprogramming adult cells into embryonic-like stem cells – hailed by the journal Science as the scientific breakthrough of the year – are said by many scientists to be making embryonic stem cells irrelevant to medical progress.
  • 'Third, adult and cord blood stem cells are now known to have great versatility, and are increasingly being used to reverse serious illnesses and even help rebuild damaged organs. To divert scarce funds away from these promising avenues for research and treatment toward the avenue that is most morally controversial as well as most medically speculative would be a sad victory of politics over science.'
"If the government wants to invest in hope for cures and promote ethically sound science, it should use our tax monies for research that everyone, at every stage of human development, can live with."
###
ACTION ITEM
Research that destroys human embryos is morally unethical, unpopular and unnecessary.  This is a very sad day in America.  Lord, have mercy on us and on our nation.

Please send a message to the White House letting President Obama know you disapprove of this new policy and would like for him to support building a culture of life.

Reflections from Rev. Msgr. Mark J. Seitz, pastor of St. Rita Catholic Church, Dallas

Embryonic Stem Cell Research and Human Dignity

It is often said that every man has his price.  In this age it seems that even moral absolutes have their price in the minds of many.  Actions are viewed as morally wrong only until I decide that the action would have sufficient benefits for me.  This is the moral relativism we have often heard our present and our previous Holy Fathers condemn.  This approach to morality has led our society into actions many of us would never have imagined possible.
